Ideas for next week- URGENT

Hi everyone,

We really need to get everything together in the next ten days. We have the night on Saturday, which we will use as a group intervention. Charlotte is away, but we have agreed a skype video for the final project. This will take place in the form of a news show- presenting different aspects of our project.

This is defined by the performer (my performance for open mic), audience (Saturday night) and the bouncers section will explore the space/venue. We are exploring exclusivity and inclusivity via three different means which will be used on the show. Before every segment there will be the rationale presented by one person interviewed by (I believe Patrick). This will give every section relevance and link all the aspects together.

Therefore we need to start filming- this will be next Monday. We will record our interviews with real-life bouncers. This will be kept anonymous to hid identification and acted out by Harry and Georgia (again I believe). If contact details are needed for my interview please speak to me personally. Jyoti has kindly agreed to film and edit the video. The other sections will be me explaining and the ensuing video of the open mic, interviews with Clare and with any luck the organiser of the night.

Our actions at the night are yet to be decided, yet I don't think being kicked out is necessarily the best idea- we have already explored that through the bouncers section. I think we may be better advised to enjoy and experience the night in weird ways talking to people about their experiences as well. This is an inclusive club, to be kicked out may require crass dress (cultural appropriation etc) and things that border on hate. Our intervention can be artistic, Jyoti suggested a dance, a picnic or something along those lines- I think a picnic is a nice idea as we can invite people into our groups to discuss topics. We can run this like a forum theatre (See Augusto Boal)- we can use this as an open chat. Forum theatres are traditionally 4 people at a time in which other people intervene at given moments- classically when a person is being wronged. We can be provocative, but then the rest of the people can intervene and force that person out of the conversation and take their place. Then we can explore where the boundaries in a still artistic and also importantly political- we can talk with people! We can film the whole thing and cut it down.

Just some more thoughts

  1. I think thats a really good idea Emile- I think the news report works well, and I can be like the "foreign correspondant" if you will and give that kind of perspective?

But in terms of my contribution im still not really sure what I can do :/ do you think perhaps I could mirror something you guys do at inner u just at a nightclub or bar in Manila?

  2. Yeah foreign correspondent would provide a nice contrast. Could you do anything regarding bouncers? Then we can have our feature on UK bouncers then contrast

  4. Could possibly interview a bouncer at one of the bars there? I was also thinking I could do something regarding Karaoke-its such a massive part of the nightlife in the Philippines, like maybe I could go to a karaoke bar and say the lyrics rather than sing and see how they react to me ? It could also contrast with your open mic night? Not sure though just been trying to think up some ideas.

  5. Yeah sounds good Emile, think the more artistic interventions at inner u would work well. Think the idea of a picnic would be perfect, think we should go all out for that. It would attract good attention and I feel people there would be very open to coming and joining in too which would be good for us.

  6. Definitely think the idea of having a picnic is a good plan. It's actually kind of cute and inviting but still an intervention as obviously having a picnic at a club night isn't a particularly normal activity. It should get a good discussion going and we don't have to be rude to anyone to get kicked out. Plan is a GO i reckon, see u guys tomorrow xx
